Avian Space Use in Agricultural Landscapes: Effect of Forage Plantings and Pesticide Exposure
We are seeking a motivated graduate student (MSc or PhD level) to join our PPSN (www.prairiepsn.ca) research team investigating how granivorous and insectivorous birds use agricultural fields in relation to planted perennial forages and conduct an exposure assessment to determine if pesticide exposure alters movement patterns and space use. We are motivated to test whether small targeted reductions in cropping of marginal lands on working farms can measurably alter movement behaviour, reduce chemical exposure, and affect reproductive success.
This project will combine field ecology, spatial analysis, and conservation biology to understand how sustainable farming practices influence bird behaviour, habitat use, and long-term population viability. The student will gain experience in GPS and Motus telemetry, field surveys and productivity monitoring, and GIS-based habitat modeling. They will also be working as part of a larger team to contribute to broader research and discussions on sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation.
